How To: Pour A Perfect Pint of Guinness
A few years ago I spent a week in Ireland. While there, I learned 3 things:
1) There is no food in Ireland… only Guiness and Smithwicks.
2) Adare Manor is where I want to retire.
3) It should take 119.5 seconds to pour a pint of Guinness.

While on the Guinness Factory Tour, I took the “how to pour the perfect Guinness” class. Pouring a Guiness is much different then pouring a traditional beer because its done in two unique steps. Historically, barkeeps would partially fill a glass with older cask beer. When that beer was eventually ordered by a customer, fresh, “gassier” beer would complete the pint and the finished product was actually a blend of old and fresh suds. Though not necessary, the long elaborate process is still endorsed by the company suggesting that “Good things come to those who wait”. In any case, its a unique experience and well worth the wait!
Heres how you do it:
First, you’ll need a pint glass. Ideally, a slighly tulip shaped British glass, about 20 oz. Hold the glass at a 45 degree angle and fill down the side of the glass. As you fill, turn the glass back to its upright position and stop when its about 2/3 full. Let the Guiness settle for about 90 seconds. Finally, top it off and serve while the cascading carbonation does its thing… pure beauty! If you really want to get fancy, make a shamrock in the head of the beer while topping off the last 1/3 of beer.
