Man Math 101: BTF & BTPO Numbers
If you haven’t done so already, please read the Introduction to Man Math before proceeding.
Aaah…Thanksgiving. There may be no better time to catch up with your hometown friends and family than Turkey Day weekend. I’m barely coming out of my tryptophan induced unconsciousness and I’m already thinking about the beer coma I’ll be falling into with my buddies tonight. And whether your throwing ‘em back in The Mantuary or hitting up the local watering hole this weekend, there is some Man Math I’d like to share with you to ensure your conducting yourself as a real Man should.
As we all know too well, alcohol can hinder one’s ability to act like a respectable Man. So often we see drunken fools act intollerant, lash out, get over aggressive, and finally let their beer muscles get them into fights. Over the years, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve either been “that guy” or hung out with “that guy” and I know I’m not alone. Over the course of any Man’s life, I think we’ll all experience this on some level. But like all Men should, we grow up and mature (somewhat). Now that I am married with 2 kids, it’s obviously time I find myself in the company of those that can handle themselves while drinking. And while I still enjoy some ball busting and the occasional loud mouth, I draw the line with fights. Explaining to the kids why daddy had to bail out his friend for pummeling some guy who looked at him wrong is just not acceptable.
1. BTF (Beers To Fight) Number: For that reason, I now closely monitor the Beers To Fight (BTF) number of the people I drink with. The BTF number is the number of beers it takes before a guy gets beer muscles and is ready to “roll heads”.
Example: 6 Beers =

Back in college, I knew guys who had BTF numbers below 6, which got old real quick.
2. BTPO (Beers To Pass Out) Number: These days I only hang out with guys who have BTF numbers that are higher than their Beers To Pass Out (BTPO) numbers. In other words, everyone passes out before even having the urge to get in or start a fight.
Example: 18 Beers =
So if you repeatedly find yourself in questionable company, start associating with friends that have BTF’s higher than their BTPO’s.
In conclusion, The Founding Father’s Theory of Safe & Appropriate Socializing as it pertains to healthy BTF & BTPO numbers states:
If you or the guys you hang out with…
have a BTPO > BTF = if in college, socialize with caution
have a BTPO > BTF = if a father with kids, get help or find new friends
have a BTF > BTPO = whatever the situation, drink up!
Stay tuned, more Man Math 101 to come.
Be A Man.
