Man Math 101: AS & ATS Ratios
If you haven’t done so already, please read the Introduction to Man Math before proceeding.
1. AS (Alcohol to Sleep) Ratio: This is a great scale you can use to gauge your hangover. Simply take the number of alcoholic beverages that you consumed and divide it by your total hours of sleep. I don’t even want to think about what my numbers were back in college.
Example: 12 Beers / 4 Hours of Sleep = 3
- In college you can start thinking about skipping class when your AS is above 6.
- Leave the wife and kids at home for a weekend in Vegas with the guys: anything less than a 5 and you’re just not having a good enough time.
- Married with 2 kids, anything over 2 is brutal.
2. ATS (Alcohol and Tobacco to Sleep) Ratio: A variation of the AS Ratio that takes into consideration tobacco use - a hangover’s worst enemy. You take the number of alcoholic beverages that you consumed multiplied by the number of tobacco products consumed and divide that number by your total hours of sleep.
Example: (12 Beers * 2 Dips) / 4 Hours of Sleep = 6
- Anything above 5 and you’re experiencing a world of hurt.

My AS is usually a 2 on weekdays and I have 3 kids. When I have time with the pals and/or an outing I chart in the 5-6 category. Most friendly neighborhood poker games I am the only one with a about a 3 for a 3.5 hour game…I guess what I am asking is what defines alcoholism?
