Stuff You Should Own: The Primo XL Oval
As the Hen will attest, I have a small obsession with outdoor cooking equipment. Over the course of my life, I’ve spent more money on BBQ equipment than I have on cars. I’ve either borrowed, tried or bought just about every type of smoker and grill out there. I recently put my Weber kettle in my will. When I was selling my Lang a few years ago I turned a guy down because I didn’t think he’d treat it well. I once saved an abandoned, smoldering charcoal grill after a Jimmy Buffet Tailgate because I felt bad for it. Like I said, just a small obsession. My quest to run the gauntlet of what the BBQ world has to offer has been and adventurous one. From offsets to bullets, stick-burners to pellet fed, charcoal to propane, my BBQ journey has been of epic proportions.
After this weekend, I think the road I’ve been traveling for so many years has finally come to an end because I’ve reached BBQ utopia. I’m not sure this earth has anything better to offer me than the Primo XL Oval I purchased last weekend. (I was debating between 3 different style smokers that I previously reviewed here) I ultimately went with a ceramic because of their amazing efficiency and versatility. I went with the Primo over the Big Green Egg because it is the biggest ceramic out there touting 680 square inches of cooking space. The one and only downside to the Primo was the expense and I knew the Hen was ready to strike me down on ths one. Maintenance ratios in mind, I used my poker proceeds to pay for this beauty and kept it off “our” books… like I said, BBQ Utopia!

Its now day 5 and so far, I’ve cooked a turkey, 2 chickens, 4 racks of ribs, 4 pizzas, a batch of ABT’s, 2 salmon filets and a couple steaks. This thing is so well insulated, I have over 25 hours of cook time and used less than 1/2 a bag of lump charcoal. Its even safe enough for me to keep on our wooden deck so my grilling frequency will be hitting an all time high.
As soon as I can settle down and remember to take pictures, I’ll be launching a whole section dedicated to cooking on a ceramic cooker.
Till then-
Be A Man.
